PROFINET is a communication protocol that is used in industrial automation. In order to fulfil the various requirements in different application areas, PROFINET has been divided into different conformance classes. These classes define the capabilities and properties that a PROFINET device or system must offer in order to support certain applications. There are three main classes:
CC-A: For simple, non-time-critical applications.
CC-B: For more time-critical applications with real-time capability and network management requirements.
CC-C: For highly dynamic applications that require deterministic and synchronised real-time communication.
Most applications require the CC-B class, which is also supported by many Weidmüller switches.
LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) is a standardised protocol (IEEE 802.1AB) that network devices use to transmit information about themselves to neighbouring devices. This information can include, for example, the device name, port information, VLAN assignments and other important network parameters. LLDP is useful in many network infrastructures, especially for the administration and troubleshooting of networks. However, there are scenarios in which it makes sense to block LLDP messages and others in which this should not be done.
